Arriving in Suzhou

2010 01 02

As you can see, the camera didn't break! Yay! The built in flash doesn't work anymore, but who uses that anyway?

Shanghai train station is being rebuilt and renovated just like the rest of the city.

Me and Arnaud, soon to board the train!

Arthur and Rachel, who was kind enough to arrange this trip and be our guide.

Me and Bjorn. We spent the 40-minute trip playing video games. Very social!

In Suzhou, just outside the train station, there were a lot of tents where they sold tourist trips. That means
they sold entry tickets to sightings as well as transportation between them. We decided to have a go!

In the cab; let's have a group pic!
1..2..3... fail!

That's better! Though a little unsharp, everyone is is the picture ;)

First stop: checking in at the hotel Rachel booked for us.

The hotel was really nice! Lovely gardens and comfortable (though a little small) rooms.

Weekend trip!

2010 01 02

We were just going to the bathroom before meeting up with the French in the hotel lobby to go to Suzhou for the weekend... and we missed them! The french decided not to wait for us, so we hurried after them and got to the Shanghai train station almost at the same time. Well done us!
We sat down and waited for our train, as Rachel had told us the train left half an hour earlier than it actually did. A sneaky trick that always gets the job done.
As they called out that our train was boarding the following happened:

Yes, that is correct. Bjorn dropped our (almost) brand spanking newcamera on the floor.

Ikea again

2010 01 01

First day of the year. To celebrate, we went to Ikea to pick up some more Swedish candy, batteries for our new Wii Fit and some more glögg. First we followed Arnaud to have a look at his apartment. He is sharing it with two others and its pretty nice.
Outside there was some kind of ballon arrangement and we decided to pose and make some love to the camera and not act like retards. Or was it the other way around?

Ok. Enough of that, lets go and have a look at Arnauds place!

The view from the living room window, a pretty nice view. You can see the city and in front of that the parks that are quite nearby. Unfortunately some of the other buildings in the complex blocks parts of the view but hey, can't have everything.

A view of the living room. The curved window in the back was quite nice.

Arnauds gift to Lilian, the owner of the apartment, was the fruit basket. She got angry of him because he had wasted money buying that instead of buying chocolates. Lilian seems to get very angry at a lot of things. So Arnaud bought a pair of soft boxing gloves so they could punch each other with them instead. I just had to try them on...

Look at my tiny hands! Know that its It's not the size of the boat but the motion in the ocean.

FINISH HIM!

Knockout!

So. We got into a cab, put four people in the back seat and drove off. Arnaud got the job of distracting the driver so he would not notice that we were four in the back of the car. However as soon as the dirver opened his mouth Arnaud quickly discovered that the smell in this particular cab came from the drivers dental hygiene. As he complained, Lilian started having a conversation with the driver instead, Arnaud was not too amused.
So we cheered him up by showing how tall he was compared to the chinese guards(?) of IKEA.

Of course the people on the other side wanted to see if they were tall enough. Of course they were not.

So, Ikea has swedish food. And this. We just had to get some.

And since we are in China, we eat them with chopsticks (kuai zi)

Raaaaaaawr!

Sad swedish potato man is sad because someone chopped him in half.
In the making of this blog post, no potato men were harm...ba! Who are we kidding? We ate them all!

Happy New Year from Shanghai!

2009 12 31

With five minutes to go, we hurried outside to celebrate the new year. We expected a lot of fireworks as in Sweden. We didn't get any. What we got was a sky lit up by lanterns!
It was like magic, wonderful and pretty and calm. There was a live band palying music and lots of people lighting up lanterns and making a wish as they took off. That's the tradition in China. And I must say, it was a lot better than fireworks! No noise, no smoke, and much more beautiful! Also it was fun without risking to blow up anyones face or fingers. We met up with Bjorns colleagues and on our way to find a taxi they bought a few lanterns to light up.

A street full of people with a live band at the end of the street.

People lighting up their lanterns.

Some were caught by the breeze and got stuck in the trees.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We tried to take pictures of the sky, but none of the pictures do justice to this experience.

On the other side of the street festival there were these building, which contrasted a lot to the warmth and happiness. I think they looked very doomsday futuristic!

Yohann trying to loght up his lantern.

Big boss Arthur helps.

After you've managed to light it up you have to wait for a few minutes for the air inside to heat up enough...

...to take off! First it headed toward the ground, and Yohann said we had to make a better wish. So Arnaud wished that Lilian (his flatmate) never becomes president of China. And then the lantern soared!

On the streets were remnants of glitter confetti from the countdown to midnight. We tried to take pictures of the glitter in the air, but it was impossible to catch it.

A woman selling light...stuff. She looked funny as she walked along with all those lit up things.

Second lantern to take off! This time however we had moved to the river to let it fly freely, not taking any risks with trees etc. But I was so cold by this time that I hid inside Starbucks with Lilian.

After lighting that second lantern we tried to find a cab to take us back from Pudong to Puxi (pronounced pu-shi). But it was impossible! We walked around for nearly two hours, when we finally headed towards a hotel to party insted. When we got there the party had apparently ended, but they had buses driving people back to Puxi. And! we were allowed to go with one of them. The bus dropped us off at
Peoples Square. I was too cold to want to party by this time so me and Bjorn tried to find a taxi back to the hotel while the rest tried to find a club to go to. Finding a taxi was not easier than in Pudong, so we started to walk back to the hotel along Huai Hai Zhong Lu. When we came to a cross road we saw manymanymany empty taxis waiting for green light, so we ran there and actually got a cab. Back at the hotel we turned the heater to maximum and went to bed.

The last dinner of 2009

2009 12 31

After a long day at work it was time to find a place to get dinner before new years eve. We were supposed to met Rachel in Lujiazui to go to a restaurant there. However a million billion chinese were in our way and when finally in Lujiazui the restaurant was closed.
As non of us had eaten yet we were not too happy so the last quest of this year would be to get some food.

We headed towards a big mall. Mag stopped outside to photgraph the sign of the mall and then could not find us. She was so used to locate my blonde hair, and now I blend in with the local people.

with people! Here we set out to find a restaurant to have our new years dinner.
The inside of the "christmas wonderland" as they called it. We found neither christmas nor wonderland. Instead we found even more people! According to Rachel the people here were not waiting for new years eve but for the huge sales that starts 00.01 on new years day.

I'm not sure Mag looks like this because she has not had food for several hours or because the French people want Sushi and Mag doesn't like the idea of that one bit.

So the french people went to the Sushi place, and at the door we decided that sushi just wasn't what we wanted and ordering some chicken from a sushi place wasn't going to cut it either. Instead we went to the next restaurant and found a place where we had a hot plate in the middle of the table and could order meat, vegetables and potatoes and make it just as we want it. Perfect.

The salad was not cut and we experienced some trouble trying to eat it with just chopsticks. The tenderloin (bottom left on the first picture) was also quite tricky to eat with just chopsticks. Eventually we gave up and used our hands just a litte.

So much food. Maggie liked the beef bacon meat the most so I had the tenderloin and angus steak for myself! Also we made our own chips from the potatoes, tasted like heaven.

Mag displays her chopstick technques. Don't try this at home kids! While we did not have knives which would have been a good idea for a place like this they did have salt and pepper on the table which is rare in China. I've actaully considered carrying around salt and pepper, because at some places the food really doesn't taste like anything at all...

It's amazing how a few peices of food transforms a girls facial expression from "I want to kill you, your friends, your dog and anyone who tries to stop me" to "I like you, thanks for giving me food, now I'm happy"

Yours truly at work, these pictures are taken with 1 second delay and I've already put two more peices of meat on the frying board. This is all true.

And here is what the French/Chinese people ate. Lets just say that we definately had a better dinner althoughmore expensive (but still cheap with western standards). We had four huge glasses of juice, two plates of lettuce, two plates of potatoes and four plates of very good meat for just 242 RMB.

At this point it was only 5 minutes left until midnight so we rushed out on the streets.
Read all about it in the next post!

En julklapp till Per och Åsa

2009 12 31

In English:
This is a christmas present to Björns parents, who wished for more pictures of us. After nagging him about it Björn actually shot a few pics of himself. I hope his parents are happy with the result!

New years eve in Shanghai

2009 12 31

Såhär firar man nyårsafton i Shanghai!

In English:
This is how you celebrate New years eve in Shanghai! Squeezing in all the public places with the rest of the 18+ million living here. Our first stop was Metro City, where we took the metro to Pudong. But it wasn't all that easy to get to the metro as you can see! There were so much people in the streets, and there was a cene and concerts in the square.

Eventually we got to Pudong, and before we show you the delicious food we ate or the actual celebration you get to see some cool buildings and our company (yes, the French guys) who's always more than happy to stand in front of the camera!

A day off

2009 12 31

This is how I spent the 31:st of December 2009. The AKQA staff had a day off, and most of it I spent at the hotel relaxing. But then the housekeepers really really wanted to do their job so I dragged myself away to have some breakfast-lunch-dinner-something at Ajisen (closest resaturant to the suites hotel with and English menu, not counting McDonalds).
After that I walked around the area, and then tried to get money from an ATM for the first time. Didnt work the first three times. The fourth time it did! But that was when I had changed to an ATM machine that actually worked...
After that I took the metro (by myself for the first time!) and headed to Nanjing west road. It was scary at first, but when you're alone you can listen more carefully to the names of the stations and then it's quite easy to find your way around.
At Nanjing Xi Lu (xi lu = west road)  Google had told me there was a Muji. Muji is the Japanese version of Granit, though a tad cooler. There I went looking for a specific calendar (that muji.com wont ship to either Sweden nor China). They didn't have it in store, though I did find a tiny cute plastic bottle (perfect to empty my Urban Decay Primer Potion in, I think) and some coloured pens.

At Ajisen, waiting for my food.

Rather tired and very unhappy about being forced to go out in the COLD.

When you walk around in Shanghai you find these small stores that have anything and everything you don't need.

2009 12 31
Ceiling decorations of the same shop. Actually I think it's merchandise on display.

Going by the metro all by myself!

At the mall where the Muji store was located the icons showing you to the restrooms are quite funny. Yes, yes, very conservative gender roles with girls not having to pee or poop but just do makeup. But still!

Hotellfrukost

2009 12 30

In English:
Speaking of food pictures... here's a picture of my and Björns hotel breakfast! Just add a scrambled egg each and tea for me and we're all set.

Massage at Dragonfly

2009 12 29

This was my christmas present from Mag. Massage at Dragonfly.
Dragonfly sure isn't cheap, you can get an hour for about 40 RMB here and we spent 450 each for two hours of massage. First hour was full body aroma oil massage and second hour a combination massage with one masseur for the head and one for the feet. It was simply amazing.
We left feeling as king and queen of the world. And we also took some pictures to show you guys how the place looked of course.

Thanks again Mag. I loved every minute. Love you lots.

Lunchtime

2009 12 29

Laura and Robert asked for more pics of food... so here you go! Only 12 RMB for these beef with peanuts noodles. Tasty!
...or was it that I was not supposed to post more pics of food in case you eat your screens? Oh, it's so hard to remember! ;)

The last minutes of "Ginger"

2009 12 28

Both me and Mag needed to bleach our hair so we can look like tall blonde swedes. However, the bleach here is not really made for hair like ours and work differently. I decided to be the test subject since I care less about my hair (as you might have noticed). The result was... interesting, I looked like a carrot. The french guys called me "Ginger" and I wore my hat every day.

The solution was to color the hair black to make sure the secret was covered. But before that I wanted to show you the last seconds of my wonderful orange hairdo (yes, I'm wearing a plastic poncho to protect my body from the black dye... yes, it's small plastic covers for the ears too)

Time to go black.

Ajisen regulars

2009 12 27

In English:
Today our plan was to do a lot of stuff... but then it started snowing! Snow is rare to see in Shanghai according to my sources. Unfortunately the big and wet snowflakes melted away instantly. Our plans for the day weren't ambitious enough, so we settled for lunch at Ajisen and then some shopping at Metro city. Mostly we got Wii games for 5 RMB each.
My colleague Darren (from Singapore) told me that this was the first time he's ever seen snow. Cool!

Arnaud is a frequent user of his french-mandarin dictionary... though mandarin is hard to pronounce and even if the translation is correct for one situation it's not always right because chinese have a lot of words for the same thing but different situations. Instead of grammar. Example: the word for one is differentdepending on what item you are referring to!

Art gallery (and pictures of food)

2009 12 26

Plans for today was to go to the fake market and get new shoes for me. The ones I was supposed to bring I left back in sweden so I have been using the ones I was supposed to discard when leaving Sweden! The french guys went with us but first of all, a pit stop at the korean place where we ate with Yohann earlier. By request we are posting more about the food, and this place is really, really good.

Waiting for the food to arrive we already got some vegetables, tea and a cup of egg.

Mag dares to try the appetizers

Chopstick fight. Or just posing. Or both. You can't tell, you don't know.

And here is all the food, there is more on the right but we just can't fit all of it into the camera. The corn pancake or whatever it is that Arnaud is serving himself in the picture was amazing

Lets go this way Boss says, we obey

Flexible chinese grandparents in people's park

Arnaud ran around with his new camera, Mag and Arthur just wanted to go somewhere else it seems. They all have a look that would fit in a movie poster here.

Mag and Arthur in the small amusement park at People's Square

"Good doggie, now kill! Kill! Good boy!"

Yes, it's a boy

Maggie shows off her most  serious face

And another posing before heading into the gallery of contemporary art. It was only 20 RMB so we did a quick detour before the fake market

A cute steampunk submarine

One of the coolest sculptures in the gallery. A mix between a shark and a F1 car.

Another freaky sculpture

A cute one. An orc sitting on top of a little moon, also notice the little spaceman.

Another cool idea for a sculpture.

And of course there was a lot of paintings too. This was one of the more funny ones.

After this we went to the fake market. I bought shoes and a new backpack at a bit too much money for being the fake market but good prices compared to Sweden. We met up with Rachel who took us to a restaurant close to the hotel where we had some delicious food for very little money. Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of that food so you will just have to trust us that it was nice.
We will end this one with pictures of the posing outside of the restaturant instead.

Christmas party at Max place

2009 12 25

Maxwell had a christmas party and we were invited! When we had dinner at Di Shui Dong a few weeks ago Fionnie introduced us to Max. Max then invited us to his christmas party. It was at his house, which was a very nice flat with floor heating, balcony, two bathrooms and everything! Two bathrooms is something I want in our apartment. As well as an oven, but that's impossible to get in China.
Maxwell treated us with christmas presents, a huge dinner buffet as well as champagne and wine. We brought three bottles of Glögg that seemed really appreciated. we didn't bring any pepparkakor but it turned out that Max already had two boxes!

Our host trying to find christmas presents for us. There were lots of presents under the tree and everyone attending the party got at least one...

Fionnie next to the mountain of presents. The one she's holding was for me, but most of them were containing...

...Nerf guns! You can all guess in which direction this party went, right?

WAR!

Girl using a pillow as a shield, (notice the nerf dart that just bounced of it as well)

If you were lucky you gould eat in peace, but the ammo kept bouncing off people, walls and other stuff into the food and drinks so you still had to watch out!

There was soo much tasty food. No way that we could finish all of it! There were roasted turkey, potatoes, mashed potatoes, salads, cranberry sauce, green beans, fruit salad and lots more to choose from.

Here's Björn playing with his toy, a small RC car while preparing to do some more wartime photography. I got the huge car, but unfortunately there weren't enough batteries to drive it! So I engaged in the war instead...

The Swedish resistance.

Kitchen strike force team. Plates also work as shields (as well as human bodies...)

Further proof of the awesomeness of the shield technique!

Reloading!

First person shooter?

One (?) of the presents contained colouful clay, so some entertained themselves not by shooting eachother but baking cakes, roses and spiders.

Clay cookies and stuff for the fighting troops, perhaps?

Maxwell shows off his christmas present: titty slippers. We were all speechless.

Kelly and Fionnie posing for the camera.

The chinese language is very exciting that it's very short, both in speech and writing, so when I told them my full name they were astonished! Even my first name (Magdalena) is long enough for a few chins to drop!

Fionnie the arms dealer, having collected all the muntions, corrupts the theathre of war for her economical gains.

-OK! take the ammo, just dont use it on me!
But Kim showed no mercy.

He got his punishment though...

The warriors posing.

Some of the guns had laser pointers as well! High tech shit!

The war is finally over. Champagne for everyone who is left standing!

This was one of the best christmas parties we've ever attended. Thank you so much Max for inviting us! I hope you like the pictures!
